The West
Rocks with sky in Colorado Springs. My digital camera failed me, but I also had the immortal F100 handy!

Red banner
I seem to be posting a lot of photos of flags of one kind or another this month! This time from Union Square. For some reason the Hare Krishna people were out in force this year, I don't remember seeing them there before.

Science fiction
This makes me think of the spaceships on the covers of the science fiction books I sometimes read as a kid. Looks to me like it's about to take off and fly away somewhere far.

Off duty
This guy grabbed my attention since looked out of place among the usual Soho shopping crowd. Although he was a little wary, but he didn't seem to mind me taking his picture -- but he left where he had been standing as soon as I was done. Looking closely at this photo you can see the earpiece I hadn't noticed at the time, so I guess he is a store security guard or something.
Apart from the "out-of-placeness" of this guy, I liked the combination of him and the woman's photo in the shop window behind him, but the effect is kind of ruined by the black windowframe intersecting his head. I've been paying attention to the background when I take a street portrait more than I used to, but the "and you can ask the subject to move a bit, too" part is clearly still eluding me.

After hours
Something about the colours and lines of this office building caught my eye. Not a great photo, but I think it says something.

Holiday lights
Decorating trees with lights is a big thing around some of the fancier parts of Manhattan. Bright enough to capture with Provia 400X.

Best photos of 2011
Since I've been posting photos for more than a year now and it's the start of a new year, I took a look through the photos I took in 2011 and picked out 10 of the best. In chronological order in the posts they appeared in:
- View through a hole
- Series
- Giants
- Columbus Park
- Little Italy
- Birds in flight
- Morning, Buffalo
- Chess players
- Lion on Fifth Avenue
The tenth photo is one I took on the Williamsburg Bridge on December 30th, so it barely qualifies, but it's one of my favourites from the whole year:

November afternoon
A view of the Hudson River from behind Stuyvesant High School that I took a few months ago, from a roll of Fuji Provia 400X film I just had developed. It has a coarser grain than Velvia 50 and colours don't come out as saturated, but it's a lot more convenient to use.
