The last cigar

Until about a month ago there was a cigar shop on West Broadway in Soho that always had a group of customers outside enjoying cigars, which made it a great place to take photos. Now it seems to be closed, though the last couple of times I've walked past, there are still a few cigar smokers outside. It feels like the end of an era.

Interrupted

Back after a long break. I interrupted this guy doing something on his phone and asked if I could take a photo. Maybe I should have asked him to move his hands out of the frame, but this way I captured the moment more authentically. I really like the texture of the wall behind him.

Just two

Waiting at the corner

I saw this guy standing at a street corner and he looked like he was waiting for someone, so I asked him if he'd mind having his portrait taken. I take horizontal portraits that often,  but here the "vintage Soho" backdrop called out for it.

Cat man

When I saw this guy in Soho with a cat I asked if I could take his photo, but he wasn't really giving me his full attention so I can't count it as a portrait. Last weekend I saw him again in Union Square, so it looks like he's a local celebrity.

One night only

A guitarist I saw performing on the sidewalk in Soho. The circles in the shop window are an unexpected bonus!

The pedestal

When you see a guy sitting this way on a pedestal, you have to ask him if he'd mind having his photograph taken.

Veteran

I saw this gentleman relaxing on a sidewalk bench and struck up a conversation with him, he said that he was 82 years old and he had joined the Navy when he was 16. He's a local and he lives just across the street, but the neighbourhood has changed a lot, he said. I can believe it.

Late afternoon

Late afternoon on a sunny day in Soho. Lines and textures caught my eye with this one.

Accidental symmetry

Wandering around Soho I came across these two guys on bikes creating some accidental symmetry on the sidewalk. They noticed me while I was shooting away but they kept talking while I waited for the background to arrange itself. Two minutes after this shot they were gone.

Prince Street

A street portrait on Prince Street in Soho, continuing the theme of people sitting in front of buildings. This guy was waiting for a friend but consented to having his portrait taken. I really like the peeling paint and the ironwork behind him.

Dresses for sale

There are a lot of clothing stores in Soho and a lot of street vendors, but this is the first time I saw the two being combined!

On the prowl

I try and avoid taking photos of photographers, just like I try and avoid photographing people talking on cellphones, since it feels a bit too easy and cliched. But when I saw this fellow-photographer crouching at a street corner in Soho waiting for a subject to come by, I decided to make an exception. He noticed me at just the right moment.

Standing apart from the crowd

Back in March I snapped this guy watching the crowd of shoppers in Soho passing by. Looking back at it I wonder who he is and what he thought of the scene in front of him.

Accidental meeting

This guy was selling CDs to passing tourists on a street corner in Soho, and while I was waiting for the lights to change I decided to take a photo of him, unexpectedly he looked right at me at the moment when I pressed the shutter. Instant portrait.

After I snapped this photo she said, "I'm not really a smoker, my friends don't know I'm out having a cigarette".
