Tattoo

When I asked to take a portrait of this guy in Washington Square Park he struck this pose, and I think it turned out pretty well!

Saxophonist portrait

I like photographing musicians, and this combination of saxophonist and backdrop really motivated me to try for a portrait, so I waited until he was done playing and asked if he'd mind posing. This is one of my favourite photos from this year so far.

Dresses for sale

There are a lot of clothing stores in Soho and a lot of street vendors, but this is the first time I saw the two being combined!

On the prowl

I try and avoid taking photos of photographers, just like I try and avoid photographing people talking on cellphones, since it feels a bit too easy and cliched. But when I saw this fellow-photographer crouching at a street corner in Soho waiting for a subject to come by, I decided to make an exception. He noticed me at just the right moment.

Indoor portrait

Lately I've been trying a different mode of portrait photography, photographing slightly more formal photos of people I know. Here's one I took in natural window light that I think works particularly well.

Blue watch

I saw this guy sitting on a fence at Union Square and watching the crowd, but he got down off the fence and just started leaning against it before I could snap a photo. I went up to him and asked if he could sit on it again the same way as before, but he said "how was I sitting?". But he let me take his portrait anyway.

Russia in Brooklyn

I wasn't expecting to see an Orthodox church while walking from Williamsburg to Greenpoint!

Welcome to Brooklyn

A random street scene in Williamsburg. When you see a car like this coming down the street, how can you not take a photo of it?

On the steps

I've been giving some thought to what might make a good "New York in summer" theme, or rather, New Yorkers in summer. We don't really have brownstone apartment buildings where I grew up, so people sitting on the steps outside their building is a characteristically New York kind of a thing for me. Maybe I can make a series out of it?

East River in winter

I was out shooting film in Williamsburg this weekend and finished a roll, but I think this is from back in February. A view from Williamsburg over the East River towards around 14th Street, with Stuyvesant Town in the foreground.
